About Michigan State Rugby
In 1965 the first MSU Rugby game was played against their number one rival, the University of Michigan. Founded by an English Grad Student, Neville Doherty who formerly coached the rugby squad at Amherst University. With this humble beginning of thirteen Hoonyaks, the MSU Rugby team was born.
For nearly 50 years the MSU Rugby Team has grown and evolved into a leader in the Big Ten Universities Rugby Conferenece, but perhaps more importantly MSU Rugby has taught thousands of players that they can compete at the highest level of collegiate competition. And they have used that competitive knowledge to be great in their careers and in life.
We know from the MSU News ‘Scrolls’ that the beginning of our team was based on Neville’s love of the game of Rugby. We pay tribute to Neville and continue that love of the game today with the hard work, sacrifice, toughness, and teamwork of today’s young men on the field of battle. We don’t play for scholarships, we don’t play for the opportunity to turn Pro, we play for the man next to you, the tradition that is Michigan State Rugby, and the knowledge that together we can be great at the toughest game in the world.
