About Davenport Rugby

Davenport University Rugby is a comparatively young collegiate program. Getting its start in 2009, Davenport was a trend setter as one of the first small school rugby programs in the country to adopt and run with a full varsity model. In its short existence, the team has helped turn a national spotlight on the university, winning back to back USA Rugby D1AA National Championships in the 2010-11 and 2011-12 seasons and garnering a 6th

Seeking continued development, Davenport made the jump to D1A in the fall of 2012, testing its rugby aptitude against some of the top clubs in the country on a weekly basis. The 2013-14 season brought the most recent playoff appearance for the Panthers, as they made a run into the quarterfinals, knocking off a tough West Point side in the first round before falling to another strong varsity model club and conference foe in Lindenwood University.

Moving forward, Davenport University Rugby seeks to build upon its past success on the field, while continuing to provide one of the country’s premier college rugby experiences to its student athletes. place finish in the 2013 USA Rugby Collegiate 7s National tournament.

Coaching Staff

  • Head Coach: James Wood
    • Player: Wood played for the Grand Valley State University RFC and then the Grand Rapids Gazelles RFC. Wood also represented the state of Michigan at the collegiate and men’s club levels, as well as the Midwest in rugby 7s.
    • Coach: Wood started coaching in 2003 at Rockford High School where he helped lead the team to a D1 State Championship in 2008. He enters his fifth season as part of the Davenport program, and first season as head coach. In his first four seasons as an assistant Wood worked directly with the forwards and oversaw the strength and conditioning needs for the team.
  • Assistant Forwards Coach: Doug Powers
    • Player: Powers started playing rugby in 1992 for the Grand Rapids Gazelles and played for 13 seasons before retiring in 2004.
    • Coach: Powers started his coaching career in 1998 as co-head coach of a brand new high school squad at Grand Rapids Catholic Central, where he coached until 2008. In 2009 he started his collegiate coaching career at Calvin College for one season before accepting a position with Davenport in 2010.
