After a weekend jam-packed with Top 20 matches there were bound to be some changes to the rankings’ landscape. In total there were six teams in action, including two Top 20 matchups.
#5 Penn State got their season underway against #11 Notre Dame College. It was a close affair between the two Rugby East sides, and with the 15 minutes left in the game, the Falcons held a 14-10 lead and looked to be on their way to an upset. However, three tries to the Nittany Lions in the final 12 minutes saw Penn State hold on to their #5 ranking. #6 Army, also in Rugby East, played two conference games against St. Bonaventure and Buffalo. St. Bonaventure pushed Army, but couldn’t contain the Black Knights, and Buffalo was just outclassed. However, given the parity Rugby East put on display this weekend, Kutztown, who lay dormant over the weekend, found themselves bumped up to #15 in the rankings. While there was no other change to the rankings for teams from Rugby East.
#20 Iona hosted #8 Navy on the weekend and, in a similar fashion to Notre Dame, the Gaels at times looked like they could beat their higher ranked opponent. However, Navy was too strong and outlasted the Gaels in a low scoring affair 25-7. The tight tussle was enough to move Iona to #19 and give them some breathing room in the Top 20.
