GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – The strong regional recruiting continues for Davenport head rugby coach Kruger van Biljon as he recently inked two Chicago-based student-athletes to continue their education and rugby career at Davenport.  Nick Santo and Sondai Adjei will join the Panther Rugby program this coming fall and played for the last couple years in the Illinois High School league. Both participated in numerous sports growing up but with the explosion of rugby in the Chicago area it gave them some more opportunities

Santos, a former track athlete and football player, comes from New Trier High School in Wilmette, Ill., just north of Chicago. Nick turned to rugby after a friend that played the game told him to try it out.  After the passing of Nick’s friend, Nick decided to give it a shot and fell in love with the game.

Nick also participated in track and ran an 11 second 100m dash in his sophomore year.   While in the football program, Nick played cornerback and running back for New Trier High School.  Nick had to pick between Rugby and Track his final year and pursued rugby.

Adjei brings a lot of experience to the 2013-14 class being involved in the High School All American Program. Sondai got selected for the USA Rugby High School All-Americans that played in Las Vegas this past Spring and also served as captain for that tournament. Joining him on that was squad were Alex Dorrier and Reece Oberlin and they will also join him this fall at Davenport.

Sondai also got selected for the All-American team that traveled to England to play in an international tournament. During his high school career at Saint Rita in Chicago, he participated in track and wrestling in his freshmen and sophomore years. Sondai focused on rugby and football his junior and senior years.

“Both these players come with a lot of athletic ability that we can develop and help mold them into complete rugby players von Biljon said. “We are excited to add them to the program and I am sure they will play a big part in the future of DU Rugby.”
