D1A Rugby: Top 20 Rankings

In a weekend that saw a lot of the teams in the Top 20 get their seasons underway, there was bound to be some movement amongst the rankings. With two of the top four teams in action, any slip up could have been costly.

#1 Saint Mary’s started their conference schedule with a game against Santa Clara. The Gaels were coming off an impressive hit out against #18 Central Washington University last weekend where they ran in 13 tries against the Wildcats. This weekend it was a fairly similar result for the men from Moraga who came away with an emphatic 84-0 win over their conference foes. They did what they had to do to protect their ranking.

#4 Cal was in action at the Dennis Storer Classic over the weekend, kicking off their first weekend of 15s for the spring. While it may have been their first weekend of the season they were already in mid-season form. Amassing an intimidating 240-7 for and against record in only four games. They certainly did enough over the course of the weekend to ensure that they wouldn’t fall, but would they climb?

The other ranked team to take the field this weekend was #13 Arizona, who had the privilege of being the first team Grand Canyon’s faced at the D1A level. It was an expansive affair with Arizona proving their pedigree and coming out on top 53-22. Despite this impressive performance, it still wasn’t enough to convince the voters that they were deserving of a better ranking. Arizona did not move in the rankings this week.

The only change in the rankings this week came at the bottom of the ladder where Air Force slipped out of the 20th position and Iona College wiggled its way into the rankings, becoming the first team from the liberty conference to attain a national ranking.
