LAFAYETTE, Colo. – Utah State University will become the second team from the state of Utah in D1A’s West Conference. A season after the University of Utah joined the conference, the Aggies will do the same for the West’s 2016 fall season.
“We are extremely excited to join D1A,” said Utah State Head Coach Zac Root. “The team has worked very hard over the last few seasons, and I feel like this is an amazing payout for them. This will grow our program for the future, and we can’t wait to start playing at the highest level.”
An impressive 2015-16 season saw the Aggies into the D1AA Playoffs where they traveled to Seattle and earned a 31-24 win over the University of Washington before their season ended in the National Quarterfinals against the University of Arkansas – which has since joined D1A’s Red River Conference.
Utah State is the fourth team to join D1A since the end of the 2015-16 regular season. In addition to the Aggies and aforementioned Arkansas, Sacramento State and Delaware will rejoin the California Conference and Rugby East, respectively.
“The West D1A Conference voted unanimously to admit Utah State based on its performance last year in D1AA, and its adherence to USA Rugby D1A-type standards,” said West Conference commissioner Rich Cortez. “The teams are excited about Utah State joining the conference that has provided many National Championship contenders in the past.”
