After a successful campaign for San Diego State in USA Rugby’s D1A, Kalei Konrad has accepted an offer to attend the newly formed Auckland Rugby Academy. Kalei was a consistent performer for SDSU at fly half and inside center. Since joining the premiere player development academy in New Zealand, Kalei has had the opportunity to attend training sessions with both the All Black 7s and 15s star Dan Carter.
Upon entering the academy, Kalei performed a robust battery of tests to assess his technical, tactical and physical capabilities. From these assessments, both the Auckland technical/tactical and strength and conditioning coaches have been able to provide Kalei with individualized feedback and training to improve his overall development including position specific sessions with Auckland ITM Cup Head Coach Paul Feeney. In addition to these sessions, Kalei has been fully immersed within the high performance unit at Auckland Rugby which will include training sessions with the Auckland Sevens and Auckland ITM cup team and attending Blues Super Rugby trainings and analysis sessions.
As competing at a high standard is imperative to player development, Kalei has also been training with and playing matches for one of the top clubs in New Zealand, North Shore. Upon completing the program, Kalei and his coaches will be provided a detailed report of his strengths and weaknesses across all of the high performance pillars which will allow him to focus on the key areas of his game which will allow him to compete for higher honors in the future. Kalei hopes to bring back what he has learned from the Academy to the Collegiate All-American camp later this month.
