Match of the week: Santa Clara vs. San Diego State
BOULDER, Colo. – Saturday, Feb. 8, San Diego State will travel north to take on Santa Clara.
For Santa Clara, the match marks its first California Conference game of the 2014 Division 1A season, and the Broncos could not be more thrilled about the team they get to kick off the season against.
“We’re excited for the game,” said Santa Clara Head Coach Paul Keeler. “We have a pretty healthy rivalry with San Diego State. This should be a very physical game.”
Coming off of a 46-3 victory against UC Santa Barbara, San Diego State looks to build off of any momentum gained from its D1A opener. It seems Alex Lichtig’s team is equally excited to renew its rivalry with Santa Clara.
“They are an athletic, physical team,” said Lichtig. “It’s going to be a tough task to travel to Santa Clara, but we’re looking forward to playing them.”
Although the Aztecs managed to handle Santa Barbara quite easily, Lichtig knows there is plenty his team still needs to work on. However, San Diego State’s coach is pleased with what he saw from their newly-appointed 15.
“One of our strongest points has been Ari Flink at fullback,” said Lightig. “He’s been a rock back there for us and I think he’ll continue to do that. Our back three has been really coming together and I think they’ll be a strong point for us moving forward.”
Santa Clara dropped former California Conference member Stanford 29-14 in its only match of 2014. San Diego State will surely be a step up from the Cardinal, and Santa Clara is eager to step onto the pitch with the Aztecs.
