BOULDER, Colo. — The first week of Allied Rugby Conference play saw two massive wins. OU welcomed the Baylor Bears to the elite rung of men’s collegiate rugby with a resounding 85-7 win in Waco. Meanwhile, D1A newbies Texas Tech and Sam Houston State battled it out with the Red Raiders coming out 91-12 victors over SHSU.
Oklahoma, with the help of nine combined tries from center Mike Al-Jiboori (five tries) and winger Brad Henry (only four), managed to outpace and outplay D1A newcomers. That said, OU’s coach sees areas that need improvement (the scrum) if OU are to make a run in the playoffs.
Texas Tech had two stars of their own in their 91-point scoring frenzy against SHSU with winger Abdul Sule scoring five tries and Kyle Kulka scoring four.
ARC action continues next weekend with Baylor @ Texas Tech, Oklahoma @ Texas, and Sam Houston State @ Texas A&M.
Next weekend will mark the first ever D1A clash for the University of Texas. It’s no small one either as arch-rivals OU sporting their loathed crimson and cream roll into Austin to take on the Longhorns. It’s always dramatic and rarely pretty when OU and Texas step onto the same playing surface, and the rugby version of the Red River Rivalry will certainly continue that tradition.
