BOULDER, Colo. – Several of players have shown well in Iona’s first two preseason matches – dominant wins over Fordham and Rutgers. In this past week’s 53-3 victory over Rutgers, seven different Gaels scored tries. However, it was No. 8 Mike Marino who dotted down twice, and led a dominant defensive effort to make him D1A Rugby’s Player of the Week
“Mike provided lots of go forward runs, and rescued some poor scrums and turned them into positives,” explained Iona Head Coach Bruce McLane. “He defended very well and made several tackles – all in 90-plus degree heat.”
Even more impressive was the fact that Marino was questionable for the match during pregame as he dealt with a stomach ailment. The sophomore Journalism major fought through the difficult conditions and circumstances to make a major impact for a noticeably improved Iona side.
