This weekend will see the continuation of a long time rivalry between the Ohio State Buckeyes and the Penn State Nittany Lions.
Coming off the heels off a tough loss to Wisconsin in the 2013 Big Ten Championship, Ohio State started their Fall 2013 preseason with a nail biting loss to University of Buffalo, 43-48. In their second preseason match against Vanderbilt, the Buckeyes starting A-side pulled out a convincing 65-7 win in preparation for Penn State.
This weekend’s match will be the first time the two teams meet in a 15s setting since the Nittany Lions dominated the Buckeyes 60-17 in April of 2012. The two teams met more recently last November for a Sevens contest where Penn once again championed 22-7 in the semi-final of the College Sevens National Championship. There is no shortage of excitement for the upcoming rugby match featuring these two top D1A contenders.
Penn State comes into the season ranked 9th by USA Rugby. Their season started with a successful camp, an alumni reunion that was preceded by as a strong Collegiate Rugby Championship performance over the summer with a tough loss to Navy (17-22) in the quarterfinals.
“We are looking to play a fast, up tempo style of attacking rugby both on attack and defense by utilizing our athleticism,” says Coach Don Ferrell as Penn State heads into their first D1A rugby match-up.
With strong support from the Ohio State Medical Center and top-notch rugby facilities on campus, these two teams truly exemplify the excellence of American collegiate rugby. The match will be held at Beekman Park (Columbus, OH), 1:00PM kick off.
