BOULDER, Colo. – The D1A Playoffs are only three weeks away, so conference matches will be scares for the rest of the spring semester. Luckily for rugby fans, there are several nonconference matches worth a closer look.

Big Ten Universities

Ohio State vs. Wheeling Jesuit
On the surface this looks like it should be a tight match between the Rugby East and the Big Ten. Ohio State finished tied for third in the BTU points table, while Jesuit ended up fourth in the East Conference points table.

Even though the Cardinals have to travel to Columbus, Ohio, Wheeling Jesuit may have a slight advantage over the Buckeyes. Since returning from Las Vegas for the LVI Collegiate 7s tournament, the Cardinals have played four matches in the 15s code including wins over Navy and West Virginia. Ohio State, on the other hand, haven’t played a competitive 15s match since losing the BTU Conference Championship game to Wisconsin.

Utah vs. Arizona State
The Utes wrap up its PAC Rugby Conference with a home game against Arizona State. Utah is a team on the rise, even after its recent loss in the Wasatch Cup to BYU. Both Arizona State and Utah took a beating when they traveled to California to play Saint Mary’s, but if the teams’ mutual opponent in UCLA is any indication as to who will win Saturday, Utah should be the favorite. The Utes pounded the Bruins in a 38-0 shutout on the road, while the Sun Devils needed a last-second score to upend UCLA in Tempe, Ariz.
