D1A Rugby: Final Canterbury D1A Top 20 Rankings for the 2016-17 season

LAFAYETTE, Colo. – A 30-24 win over Life University at the 2017 D1A National Championship game cemented Saint Mary’s College’s spot atop the Canterbury D1A Rugby Top 20 going into the offseason.

The three-time National Champions previously beat BYU and Cal to claim their No. 1 ranking ahead of the D1A Rugby Playoffs and now hold victories over the three teams ranked immediately behind them. Saint Mary’s comprehensive résumé is similar to its 2014 season when the Gaels beat BYU and Cal during the regular season before claiming its first National Championship over Life, 21-6.

Cal’s run to a second consecutive Varsity Cup title moved the Golden Bears to No. 3 and one place ahead of BYU. The Cougars ender their season with a hard-fought loss in the Semifinals to Life, 36-26.

D1A Quarterfinalists Lindenwood, Indiana and San Diego State remain in the top-half of Canterbury’s rankings, while conference champions Baylor (Red River) and Air Force (West) check-in at No. 15 and No. 17, respectively. PAC Rugby Conference’s Arizona improved its ranking by one spot before the season’s end to No. 13 thanks to the Wildcats run to the D1A Semifinals.

Cal Poly, Ohio State and Wheeling Jesuit end the season sitting just beyond the Top 20 with hopes of cracking the rankings on a permanent basis next year.

The Canterbury D1A Top 20 will go on hiatus during the summer break and return with annual preseason rankings in August ahead of the 2017-18 season.
