This week’s D1A action featured a late shakeup in the Rocky Mountain Conference. No. 17 Colorado State knocked off No. 16 Air Force 57-27, grabbing a crucial win to put the Rams in position to take the conference with a 4-0 conference record. The Rams offense exploded in the last 30 minutes despite being shorthanded from penalty trouble with Ethan Smith, Max Whelan, and Joseph Yallop scoring tries off the bench.

On the East Coast, No. 10 Army continued to make its push for a shot at the Rugby East Conference with a 51-32 victory over No. 13 Kutztown. The Black Knights looked strong offensively, notching their third win in a row, and now the Rugby East title will come down to a long-awaited matchup between Army and No. 6 Penn State. The Nittany Lions took care of Buffalo 98-17 in a late tune-up before their final conference matchup to defend their 2016 Rugby East Championship.

West Point head coach Matt Sherman was pleased with the Black Knights’ performance, but saw room for improvement before their showdown with Penn State.

“I think our guys did a great job approaching the challenge of a difficult opponent on the road with a strong mindset, which enabled them to put in our best performance of the season,” Sherman said. “But there’s a lot of lessons we can take out of this game. There was a period where we struggled with restarts and staying committed to our defensive system.”

Out of the Big Ten, No. 7 Indiana survived yet another close game, continuing their undefeated season with a 4-0 conference record after a 41-36 triumph over Ohio State. Meanwhile, No 18. Wisconsin continued to impress with a 51-26 win over Michigan State to put the Badgers in prime position to land a spot in the Big Ten championship game.
In Liberty Conference play, top teams Iona and Cortland both captured wins to remain undefeated in conference play. Iona handled UMASS 32-17 thanks to three tries from junior John Powers while Cortland downed Brockport 28-14 in an Empire Division clash. Next for Iona is an important non-conference matchup against 3-1 American International College.
