D1A Rugby Top 20 – Week 8

D1A Rugby: D1A Rugby Top 20 – Week 8

LAFAYETTE, Colo. – A loss by a top-five team and a program re-entering the rankings highlight the eighth week of the D1A Rugby Top 20.

After building a plus-386 point differential in its five Big Ten wins, Indiana was hit by a bit of a surprise when D1AA’s Notre Dame College went to Bloomington, Ind., and beat the Hoosiers, 31-30. The upset defeat to the Falcons shouldn’t come as too much of a shocker. Notre Dame College, which lost in the D1AA National Championship game to UC Davis last spring, had already notched victories over three D1A Rugby teams before its latest scalp. Notre Dame College beat No. 17 Wheeling Jesuit and St. Bonaventure to open its season before besting No. 10 Davenport by two points in September.

Arizona won six games over the weekend – in sevens. The Wildcats went undefeated, including a 19-14 win over No. 3 Saint Mary’s in the Cup Final of the West Coast Sevens at Treasure Island in San Francisco, Calif. The D1A Rugby Top 20 doesn’t take into account sevens results, so while it was an important weekend for an Arizona program that prides itself on sevens, they fall one spot to No. 16.

The Wildcats didn’t drop because of their impressive weekend in California, though. Their place at No. 15 was taken over by undefeated Wisconsin. The Badgers moved to 5-0 in the Big Ten by recording their second shutout of the season. This time Wisconsin pummeled Iowa, 94-0.

The Badgers’ big win over the Hawkeyes wasn’t the only shutout in the Big Ten. Ohio State bounced back from its narrow loss to Wisconsin by easily defeating Michigan State, 45-0. The blanking of the Spartans was the third shutout produced by the Buckeyes this season and returns them to the Top 20 at No. 19 after missing out on the rankings the past two weeks. Making room for Ohio State is Cal Poly. The Mustangs sit just outside the Top 20 at No. 21 and are followed by Colorado, LSU and Clemson.
