LAFAYETTE, Colo. – California Conference’s San Diego State has been one of the surprise stories from the spring semester. The Aztecs’ one-loss conference record and nonconference win over No. 15 Arizona have helped propel the team to No. 10 in the Canterbury D1A Rugby Top 20.
San Diego State’s potent backline, which includes playmakers Ari Fink, Nicolas Lupian, Austin Switzer, Esmat Wardak and Ari Flink, draw a lot of headlines. However, it was eight man Kevin McGlone who put in an Player of the Week shift in the Aztecs’ recent blowout win of Santa Clara.
Outdoing his two-try performance in the team’s win against UC Santa Barbara, McGlone’s dominant effort against the Broncos led to a trio of scores for the fifth-year senior.
“Kevin was effective on attack finding space and in support,” complimented San Diego State Head Coach Alex Lichtig. “That led to a hat-trick of tries on the weekend. His effort on defense was sound and he provided some much-needed physicality on both sides of the ball.”
A Social Science major at San Diego State, Kevin is a San Diego native who previously laced up the boots for Del Norte High School, as well as for Poway Rugby.
“Kevin has progressed since he joined the program as a sophomore,” Lichtig added. “He has emerged as a consistent performer, a force on attack and as one of our senior leaders in the forward pack. I’m excited to see Kevin continue to raise the bar over the next few weeks against Army and Cal Poly.”
McGlone and his Aztec teammates will look to continue to climb the D1A rankings when they take on No. 7 Army at home Saturday, March 18.
