BOULDER, Colo. – Given Army’s tradition of having a strong rugby program, many would not be surprised by its 5-0 start – which includes a 19-15 win over Penn State. However, given that the team is coming off a lengthy suspension and the fact that this is the least-experienced team Head Coach Mike Mahan has led in his 15 years coaching West Point’s Men’s Rugby team, the hot start by the Brothers is quite remarkable.
The winning streak is less shocking knowing that senior captain Collum Magee leads the cadets around the park. The openside flanker has already scored five tries this fall and couldn’t be more highly thought of by Coach Mahan.
“Magee is big for us and in ways that don’t always show up in the stat sheet,” said Mahan. “He’s just all over the field for us on defense as well as offense. So, he’s a pest to the other team and he’s always the guy who is in support. He is truly our leader on the field.”
Magee, who hails from St. Louis, Mo., and plans to go the route of aviation to fly helicopters once he is commissioned in May, will need to be his usual disruptive self this Saturday when Army seeks an upset of No. 3 Kutztown.
