Canterbury D1A Top 20: Week 17

D1A Rugby: Canterbury D1A Top 20: Week 17

LAFAYETTE, Colo. – A couple of eye-catching scores from nonconference games involving top-ranked teams was at the core of a small tremor in this week’s Canterbury D1A Rugby Top 20

The most anticipated game of the weekend saw then-ranked No. 3 Saint Mary’s defeat No. 4 BYU, 27-12. In what was arguably the best win posted by any D1A Rugby team, so far this season, the Gaels leap frogged both Cal and Life to take Canterbury’s No. 1 spot for the first time since losing the 2016 D1A National Championship game to Life.

Life didn’t have a bad weekend of its own, but still slid to No. 3 this week. The Running Eagles are coming off a massive shutout win over Arkansas State, 57-0, to retain the Huckaby Cup.

Cal, on the other hand, was on the losing end of a 28-17 contest with the University of British Colombia. The respect for the UBC program – especially this year’s squad – keeps Cal ranked in the top-two despite the 11-point loss. The Golden Bears will have an opportunity to avenge their loss to the Thunderbirds March 5 in Vancouver.

The other carefully viewed nonconference fixture from the weekend was played between hosts San Diego State and a streaking Arizona squad. After settling for three penalty kicks in the first half, the Aztecs scored three tries in the second half to defeat the Wildcats, 30-12. The impressive victory boosts San Diego State’s place in the D1A Rugby rankings by eight spots to No. 11, while Arizona falls to No. 15 this week.

A new side entered the rankings this week, too. Cal Poly earned its best win of the season when it bested Santa Clara, 50-19, over the weekend. The Mustangs had been hovering just outside of the rankings for a number of weeks before its 31-point handling of the Broncos.

Cal Poly’s addition to the Top 20 forces UCLA out of the rankings. The Bruins currently sit at No. 21 and are followed by Arizona State, Ohio State and Clemson.
