Canterbury D1A Rugby Top 20: Week 20

D1A Rugby: Canterbury D1A Rugby Top 20: Week 20

LAFAYETTE, Colo. – There has been a shakeup among the top four teams in the Canterbury D1A Rugby Top 20 for a second consecutive week. BYU’s 35-26 win at home over No. 1 Saint Mary’s pushed the Cougars ahead of Cal to No. 3. The Golden Bears, meanwhile, drop to No. 4 despite beating both UCLA and USC by a combined 179-14. Cal has been just as dominant as the other teams in the top four of the rankings, but is lacking a marquee win. That opportunity will come March 25 when the Bears host Saint Mary’s in a contest that will air live on Pac-12 Networks.

BYU’s victory over the Gaels might be the best win for a college team during the 2016-17 season other than Saint Mary’s 15-point win against BYU in February.

Life holds strong to the No. 2 spot after the team was on a bye. So far in Mid-South play the Running Eagles have beaten conference foes Arkansas State, Lindenwood and Davenport by a combined 108-21.

The lose Davenport suffered to Life, combined with San Diego State’s shellacking of Santa Clara, sees the two teams swap places, again. This week the Panthers check-in at No. 11, while the Aztecs are one spot up at No. 10.

The only other change in Canterbury’s Week 20 rankings sees Wheeling Jesuit return to the Top 20 at No. 20. The Cardinals are the benefactors of Cal Poly’s upset loss to UC Santa Barbara. The 27-22 loss to the Gauchos drops the Mustangs from the rankings.
