Canterbury D1A Rugby Top 20: Week 18

D1A Rugby: Canterbury D1A Rugby Top 20: Week 18

LAFAYETTE, Colo. – Intriguing matchups and unexpected outcomes continued throughout D1A Rugby this past weekend, creating more changes to the Canterbury Top 20.

In nonconference action, Big Ten Champions Indiana traveled to Arkansas State where it played 65 minutes of solid rugby – trailing by just four points late into the second half – before the Red Wolves’ late sprint led to a 46-23 win. The Hoosiers, of course, were without All-American center Bryce Campbell who is with the Eagles for the Americas Rugby Championship. The result moves Arkansas State up two spots to No. 8, while Indiana drops two places to No. 9.

San Diego State has navigated itself into the top-10 thanks to another win. The Aztecs smashed UC Santa Barbara, 53-21, to continue their steady rise in 2017.

Colorado State has gotten back on the pitch in recent weeks, but hasn’t quite executed the way a top-15 side should. In the past two weeks, the Rams have beaten lesser opponents, University of Denver and Utah State, by a total of 81-41. The two wins haven’t dramatically affected Colorado State, but it did allow Kutztown to leapfrog the West Conference team.

Staying in the West, Air Force also drops back this week. The Zoomies have struggled to stay competitive with some of the nation’s best squads the past few weeks. Two weeks ago, Lindenwood went to the Air Force Academy and beat the West Champions 53-7. Most recently, it was BYU that took it to the Zoomies, beating them 77-15. Now Air Force is ranked No. 18.

Clemson pulled off the biggest surprise of the weekend, upsetting a visiting Davenport squad. The Panthers were hampered by a lack of outdoor training ahead of its Mid-South opener and were without All-American Dominique Bailey. Still, it was the Tigers’ day to celebrate after their last-second, 34-33 win, which places Clemson in the Top 20 for the first time.

The Tigers’ fortune is cause for despair for Cal Poly. The Mustangs were hammered by No. 1-ranked Saint Mary’s and subsequently fall out of the rankings.
