D1A Rugby: California Play Enters Home Stretch

SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. – The California Conference is tightening up but time is the enemy of teams on the bubble. The standings are tight, but many teams could use a few more weeks of conference play after slow starts.

St. Mary’s beat Cal Poly in a 41-31 thriller in San Luis Obispo and now the Gaels only have one more league clash remaining against San Diego State next weekend (March 16).

San Diego State beat Sac State 40-14, putting the Aztecs in third place in the standings, six agonizing points away from Cal Poly and ten away from St. Mary’s in the conference standings.

Agonizing because if everything goes SDSU’s way this weekend (if Poly loses to Santa Clara and SDSU gets a bonus point win over St. Mary’s) they will still be one point shy of second place in the standings and a postseason berth.

Meanwhile, UCSB is sitting in fourth place in the standings after beating Santa Clara 33-17.
