The University of Colorado Buffaloes defeated the Colorado State Rams last Saturday by a convincing score of 43-20 at Infinity Park in Glendale, CO. The win puts the Buffs at (1-0) and the Rams at (0-1) for the early D1A season. Next week the Buffs travel to Tucson to take on the University of Arizona Wildcats and the Rams travel to Salt Lake City to face the University of Utah.
Colorado State opened up the scoring in the eighth minute when 8-man, Chris Hooyman, touched down a try to put the Rams up 5-0 after the missed conversion.
The score stood at 5-0 in favor of the Rams until the 25th minute when Colorado outside center, Brendan Cox, put down a try for the equalizer. Just two minutes later the Buffs broke the deadlock when fullback, Chris Martin, scored a brilliant try to give Colorado a 10-5 lead.
In the 33rd minute CSU flyhalf, Ryan Walker, kicked through a penalty to bring the score to 10-8 in favor of the Buffs heading into halftime. Although the Buffs were in the lead, they were down two men to start the second half due to a yellow card given to Charlie Barkmeier and a red card to Jeff Tarshis.
As the first half of play was characterized by tough defense, the second half was an offensive battle, to say the least. Colorado flyhalf, Tony Quattrini, quickly started the second half scoring when he crossed over for a try in the 41st minute. J.C. Tribulet kicked the conversion through to bring the score to 17-8 just after the restart. Quattrini touched down again in the 55th minute and Tribulet made the conversion to put the Buffs up 24-8.
Colorado winger, Luke Lahman, kept the Buffs fire burning with a magnificent try in the 59th minute that put his team up 31-8 after the Tribulet conversion. Although Colorado looked in control, the rivalry match was far from over.
In the 67th minute CSU scored a try and made the conversion to bring the score to 31-15 with 13 minutes to play. As they did all afternoon, the Buffs were able to quickly answer the Ram try with a try by lock, Lance King, and another conversion by Tribulet in the 69th minute that made the score 38-15.
Colorado State hooker, Aidan Hart, scored the final try for the Rams in the 75th minute that brought their point total to 20 for the match. Colorado brought their point total to 43 in the 81st when freshman winger, Jack Porter, scored to finish the match in style.
