Arkansas to join Red River Conference

D1A Rugby: Arkansas to join Red River Conference

LAFAYETTE, Colo. – The Red River Conference will expand to eight teams next season with today’s announcement that the University of Arkansas will be joining the Southwest’s elite men’s college rugby competition.

“We are very excited about the opportunity to compete in the Red River Conference next year, and look forward to the challenge of playing D1A Rugby,” said Arkansas Head Coach Warren Fyfe.

Playing out of the Heart of America Conference, the Razorbacks have proven their worth on a national stage by reaching the D1AA Semifinals each of the past two seasons. Furthermore, Arkansas has been competing against several Red River sides in nonconference fixtures in recent years, including a 21-14 win over Texas A&M back in February.

The 2016 Heart of America Champions have been quite successful in sevens too, having recently qualified for its third consecutive USA Rugby College 7s National Championships.

“We have a talented group of younger players who have been competitive both within our conference and nationally, so we felt that the timing was right,” added Fyfe.
