On September 21st, the Allied Rugby Conference (ARC) kicks off the 2013 Fall 7s Series at the Texas Tech University Rugby Pitches in Lubbock, TX. This tournament will encompass one day starting at 10am and ending at 6pm. All five ARC teams (Baylor, Oklahoma, Sam Houston, Texas A&M, and Texas Tech) have confirmed participation. Texas Tech will round out pool play with a second entry in the Varsity competition.
Red Raider coach, Grant Murchison, says, “Our guys are pretty excited just to get back into rugby.” He adds, “(We) look forward to the competition. (We) want to get tested so we can get better and ready for the ARC 7s Championship.”
This year’s 7s season promises to be much less lop-sided than 2012. Texas A&M won all three events and the SEC 7s series in 2012, but graduated seven of their starters last spring. However, returning champions can never be taken lightly.
Texas Tech and Oklahoma have many returning players and most spent the summer playing minutes on men’s 7s teams. These two teams look to be the strongest on paper and are the favorites to compete in this weekend’s final.
Baylor and Sam Houston were hard put in 2012, but it was both teams’ first foray into the short-game. Both teams returned plenty of experience and speed from last season. One or both of the Bears and the Bearkats should provide some excitement and spoiling moments in this season’s tournaments.
Tech Rugby expects a bigger than usual crowd for the tournament because it falls on Texas Tech’s Parents’ Weekend and a home football game that evening has the Red Raiders hosting the Bobcats of Texas State.
The ARC will live-stream the semifinals and finals on their Ustream channel beginning at 1:20pm CST on September 21.
